A recent poll shows that the recession has changed the ways Americans live and a lot of us are angry about it. No news there, but it got me wondering about how Christians are specifically being affected by the economic downturn?
I am fortunate in that I still have a job, insurance, and my home. As I look at how the recession has affected my family, honestly I have to say not much. We already try to live really frugally, somewhat by necessity and somewhat by choice, and not much as changed in our household. We already don’t eat out much, don’t take big trips, and drive old cars. We still tithe, support an orphan and try to honor God with our financial decisions.
But I am wondering if the economic downturn has refocused Christians in our country on the idea of Godly stewardship? Have you or the Christians you live in community with shown new found appreciations for stewardship or more faith during these tough times?
In my congregation I have heard really amazing stories of people actually committing more of their finances to God in the middle of this recession. I have heard of checks showing up in the mail at the right moment, others anonymously dropping off gift cards to friends in need and generosity of spirit that has been a great encouragement. There are people in my congregation who are unquestionably hurting right now. There is a growing list of people needing jobs that I am praying for, but overall the spirit of my people seems determined and faithful during this time.
How about with you and those you are in community with? What effects have you seen from the economic collapse?
