Changing Highways

September 4, 2007

Poetry

This brief poem was inspired by not only events in my own life but all my friends going through big changes. So Shannon, Loren and Maggie, drive on……

Been traveling down this same road for quite some time
Map shows a change coming up, don’t know if I am ready
It’s hard to leave a road you know and have traveled for so long
Familiar grooves, scenes of the past, landmarks mark your passage
The unfamiliar, unexpected and unknown await with foreboding

Signs been coming for some time pointing towards change
Apprehension and uncertainty growing as the exit approaches
How long will it take to feel comfortable?
How long will this road last?
How will I know if I am headed in the right direction?

In the deep, change has been brewing for a long time
But the deep isn’t a place you long to go quickly
It takes a longing and searching shaped by time to get there
Arriving there you find the same signs marked on the road
You know its right but you still don’t know where it goes

Letting go and driving on mile after mile
New scenes, new faces, new horizons upon which to gaze
My blinker is flashing, I am making the turn, can’t look back now
Pedal hits the floor to gain speed, traffic here is moving pretty fast
Slide in behind some other cars, traveling the same road
Maybe we can guide each other into tomorrow

Roads untraveled, less traveled, frequented by pilgrims on a different path
Time to settle in and find my place, find my pace and my line
New roads call for different music, finding the soundtrack for my life
Tire meets pavement, heart hears music, driver finds peace
I think this road is going to be alright
And I guess so will I

You know it’s kind of funny you talk about the road of life. Someone who spoke during Chapel today talked about going forward on the road and pressing forward. It was a great little motivator for the journey ahead.

Pressing forward to see how it will be in the end. Full of promise! More than alright…it’s going to be GREAT!
