It has been too long since I ranted and raved about the trivial and inane. So here goes…..
There seems to be a better influx of good TV shows this fall than in some time. I have been watching several of the new shows to find one to really follow so here are some observations.
Heroes – For comic book fans everywhere this show is just fun. From the strange pubescent like transformation of the new heroes to the creepy bad guys and heavy foreshadowing of impending doom, this show is a lot of fun. Good to see some semi-known actors get some work in this one including Milo Whoever from Gilmore Girls, Ali Larter of Varsity Blues fame, and Adrian Pasdar who was Chipper in Top Gun. There seems to be a lot of rehashed actors in shows these days. Interesting… Anyways, if you like comic books or hero movies, this is a fun show to check out.
Studio 60 – So is this show a comedy or a drama. Is it a funny drama or a serious comedy. I have no idea. It is a drama about a comedy show akin to SNL. Whatever it is, it works. This show must cost NBC a fortune with the huge cast they assembled. (Matthew Perry, that dude from West Wing, that dude from Wings – you know the slutty brother, Amada Peet – I don’t think she is acting in her role, I think they based a character off of who she really is – that guy from West Wing, 30something and Revenge of the Nerds – now that is a career – and DL Hughley who seems happy to have a paycheck and be the token prominent black comedian on the show) So check it out, after all with a cast this expensive it probably won’t last too long.
MNF on ESPN – I was nervous about the move of Monday Night Football to cable this year, but the transition has been easier than I thought. It is kind of like when you transition from dating a girl you have been with for a long time, even though the spark has long since left, and you are starting to date a girl you have known for a really long time and you have always been friends and were afraid of dating because you didn’t want to lost that friendship, but you knew dating was inevitable. Well, MNF and ESPN have been going out for 2 months now and the early returns are positive.
(Editors note – I got a beautiful new 37 LCD HD TV in August, which takes MNF to a whole new level. However, the main draw back is that people like Tony Kornheiser should never, ever, under any circumstances be shot in HD. Everyone who has watched a game with me has also noted that HD makes cheerleaders at a professional sporting event less of a ridiculous idea. But, I digress….)
Smith – I assume this show has already been cancelled since it aired 4 episodes and then hasn’t been heard from again. Too bad, I enjoyed them trying to make a 60 minute TV version of the movie Heat every week. Ray Liotta is one of the creepiest characters ever. Seriously, if he is in a movie, you just assume he is the killer, don’t you. Too bad for Amy Smart, after this show getting canned, she will be coming to an issue of FHM soon.
I don’t speak much about politics, but with elections looming, I wanted to offer some observations. I think the Republicans (of which I am actually a registered one, which really tells you very little about me I promise) are in for a beat down the likes of which we haven’t seen Rocky III. You remember Rocky III, Rocky’s life had become too cushy, his manager died and he lost the hunger. Clubber Lang came along with all the fire and smacked him down with ferocity. Well the Republicans have been high on the horse for a while. They have had a lot of control and frankly have made a catastrophic mess of things. I think the voters are about to beat them down. Of course I am comparing the voters to Clubber Lang not the Democrats. They would be comparable to Mr. T if Mr. T were blind, had ADD, and was paranoid and afraid of kittens. (There that should have offended everyone!)
New out of Barack Obama’s camp is that he is considering his options for running in the 2008 Presidential Election. The prospect of an Obama and Hillary show down is more delicious than the combination of grits, salsa, cheese, sausage and egg that I woofed down for breakfast this morning. (Praise God for the General Store Café and their howling grits!) I especially delight in the fanaticism that will come out of certain ridiculous conservative groups about the prospect of either a Black man named Obama or Bill Clinton’s Wife being in office.
I have been dieting for a couple of months and I have actually been losing weight. What has amazed and horrified me is that there is such an enormous amount of weight loss food and products in our country. I get it, we are fat, obese, lazy, unhealthy, and constantly swelling people in the US. All you need to know about this very real problem is that one of the largest health issues facing the poorest among us, those living below the poverty line, is obesity. Even the poorest among us have too many calories as part of their daily diet. Don’t you think that all of these weight loss products, if they actually worked, would help us lose weight? If you live on weight loss and low fat foods that have been packaged and advertised for you, I am convinced you will actually gain weight faster. Here is Greg’s new weight loss technique. I may just start my own diet program. Here it is, are you ready yet? Eat less, work out more, learn to close your mouth and open your mouth without inserting food into it. I know I am a genius, my infomercial featuring Greg Arthur’s guaranteed 3 year diet magic will be coming to a late night cable station near you soon.
A blog observation, the less controversial or trivial the topic, the less people want to comment. If they read something that is good, they agree with, and are even blessed by; they just go on with their day. However, there have thousands of visitors to this blog because of the topic Greatest Rock Song Ever. Go figure. I guess later this week we will have the debate, what is the Greatest Rock Album Ever.
Thanks for reading. If you have any observations, please offer them to us all.
Blessings-
The Prophet

Well, I could care less about anything offered on TV. I don’t care how big or clear the image is on the screen. I would be happy to toss them all into the street and drive over them with my Tacoma. That sounds extreme, huh?
I too am and have always been a Republican according to my voter registration, but have no sense of what this means in reality. Not much. I want a new party. I’m making up my own in my head. Want to join? It will be a winner, I promise.
As for diet…moderation, my friend.
No one ever (hardly) comments on my blog. Perhaps I am a controversial, non-trivial gal. Maybe something else? As long as people begin to think, maybe in a new way then I’m good with it. They can keep their comments to themselves. I will just rattle on. Peace!

Good for you on your crusade against TV. The truth is once you go HD you can’t go back. So just don’t go there. Live in a world free of the dynamic color displays that make images better looking than real life. It is like crack for the eye.
I will join you in your new political party as long as we have a cool animal as our mascot. I am thinking an Armadillo or an Orynx or a King Cobra, no one ever makes fun of the King Cobra. I am commenting on your blog as soon as I leave this reply.

I’m a Republican In Name Only myself. Take a moment for that to sink in, Greg. I almost switched my registration to Unaffiliated a few weeks ago because of my distate for the Republican Party. I decided to stick with them because the prospect of being in political Switzerland doesn’t appeal to me and the Democrats are as you described them. I would love for a new party to be created, one that truly holds to a limited government spending, limited tax model. Both parties want to spend more than I would like.
I think the Republican Party is destined for a beatdown it so desperately deserves for being so consumed by the same power the leadership complains that the Democrats so desire. It’s all about power in politics. I think it is going to be close on control of the House and Senate. Right now, I think Republicans will maintain a one or two vote margain in the House and a one vote maragain in the Senate, creating a 2008 election that will be one of the nastiest on record.
As for Obama, I like some of his ideas. I think he needs some more experience in the Senate, but he is taking the road President Kennedy took in the 1950s before being elected in 1960 – gain national attention through a book and appeal to members of both political parties. (By the way, I think Kennedy was one of the best leaders of the 20th century.) I would consider him a darkhorse right now. As for Republicans being against him because he’s black, I don’t know how much I would put into that. Had Lynn Swann been more competitive in the Pennsylvania governor race, there would have been talk of him being a presidential candidate in 2008.
As for 2008, it’s a wide-open race. The Democrats are going to have Hillary Clinton and John Edwards as the top candidates. I would have loved to have seen Mark Warner, the former governor of Virginia, make a run, but he bowed out a few weeks ago. On the Republican side, set-up a ring, call Vince McMahaon and charge people money to watch what will be a brawl for not only the nomination but control of the party in general. Newt Gingrich is making noise for a run. You’ll have John McCain, Rudy Gulliani, George Allen, Mit Romney, and a few others in consideration. Jeb Bush would’ve been a solid choice, had his last name not been Bush.

I’ll jump in with a politics comment. I recently heard about this book/arthur on my favorite news show, the Daily Show. The book is God’s Politics by Jim Wallis.
He was very impressive on The Daily Show, and I’m very interested in reading the book. There is a lot of (obviously) discontent with politics in the US, and espcially I think among Christians.
Studio 60 is sweet. And, if you really want to get pumped about a tv show, Jack Is Back

Oops, Jack Is Back link was messed up, let’s try this:

David,
I keep looking at the book to purchase. My problem is one of the book jacket quotes being from someone who political is borderline socialist.

God’s Politics is a great book and Jim Wallis is awesome. He heads up Sojourners a fantastic organization and I own that book. I will happily lend it to you.

Greg-
Sadly you’re right. I have been lurking on your blog for a while…waiting for a hot topic to pounce on (and of course a shameless plug for Toyota by Mags). Yes I’ve been lurking on your blog on my Dell(R) computer drinking Folgers(C) brand coffee (cof-fay). Grits rock! That is a drawback of marrying a Buffalo-gal…no grits! I need a fix man…just plug it in my vein!
Anyhoo-Ramblin’ time. Everybody is talking about the upcoming Democratic smackdown, but I don’t see it happening. You have the staunch red and blue voters that will vote their party regardless, so no matter what happens they will justify it and still vote that party. The swing voters will weigh in and probably more so on the Dems side this time, but I agree with Shannon…I don’t think there will be a total power shift in Congress. The Republicans have been bumbling in the public eye for a while now and it just seems to keep piling on, but the Dems don’t have a unified, concrete stance on the major issues, so they aren’t presenting a valid solution other than being the non-Republican party. Maggie…why don’t you resurrect the Bull-Moose party? Sponsored by Toyota(R) “Bull-Moose…Moving Forward”(C).
I too have been avoiding HD…I don’t need another addiction in my life (fantasy football, iPod(R), Treo(C), grits). I’m…I’m a shell of a man! Cheerleaders though. Yes, not only do they belond in professional sports…they belong everywhere! I think we all deserve our own cheering squad, but then who would cheer for the cheering squad? I think the physical world would implode.
Thats it for now, I’m going to paperpineapple and comment…Did I mention that Dole(R) brand pineapples are the only pineapples?
October 26, 2006 at 3:35 pm
I hate cheerleaders. I know hate is strong, but I confess. I thought about the Moose, but it’s too Canadian. What’s Treo, anyway? Maybe I can lead the pineapple party. It is a fruit and being fruitful is good. It’s also sweet, hospitable, makes people happy, grow in warm places, is a little prickly AND you can eat it on a toothpick. Perfect!
